At the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Genetics and Functional Genomics, Department of Molecular Genetics and Infection Biology (group Infectious Diseases), at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, there is a job vacancy at the earliest possible date, subject to budgetary regulations, for a full-time

Postdoctoral Fellow.

The position is limited to a period of three years. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft. The position is suitable for part-time employment.

The Infectious Diseases group studies host-pathogen interactions with a special focus on different streptococcal species, necrotising soft tissue infections, and how these bacteria as well as the innate immune compartment contribute to tissue pathology in such devastating diseases. The studies involve advanced molecular, cellular, and immunological investigations to discover novel disease mechanisms, identify therapy targets, and improve strategies for treatment.

Job Description:

• the postdoc will continue the successful line of investigations using advanced microbiological, molecular, imaging, and flow cytometry techniques to dissect streptococcal as well as human contribution to the rapid progression of disease
• the postdoc will perform functional experiments together with other members of the team
• the position offers the opportunity to develop research skills as an independent researcher and acquire the scientific and pedagogical qualifications required for further career advancement
• it is expected that after settling in, the postdoc shall obtain project funding by submitting national/international proposals
• the position is connected to teaching duties in the university’s bachelor’s and master’s degree courses, which include Biology, Human Biology, Infection Biology and Immunology, Biochemistry (total of 4 LVS per semester), in the field of eukaryotic genetics and infectious diseases
• supervision of doctoral candidates and other students
• contribution to common lab duties

The position on offer is aimed at postdocs wishing to complete a habilitation or equivalent qualification. Tasks will therefore be transferred that are conducive to the preparation of a habilitation or equivalent.

Job Requirements:

• a doctoral degree in microbiology, immunology or infectious diseases or a similar degree completed abroad that is deemed to be equivalent to a German doctoral degree
• the candidate must have expertise in microbiological techniques, flow cytometry analysis and sorting as well as experience in confocal microscopy
• experience in isolation and in vitro culturing of primary immune cells is a requirement, as is functional in vitro assessments of immune cell function
• the candidate should have a strong publication track record
• the candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills, and a proven ability to interact effectively and work productively in an interdisciplinary team
• fluency in English is a requirement

In addition, the following are desired:

• first experience in analysis of “omics” data
